
The night was long, heavier than any the Rajora mansion had ever seen. The grand hall, usually echoing with chatter and laughter, was unnervingly quiet. Every clock ticked louder than usual, every shadow seemed to stretch endlessly across the marble floors.
Kavita ji sat in front of the small mandir near the staircase, her wrinkled hands trembling as she folded them together in prayer. The faint glow of the diya flickered against her tear-streaked face.
